Grade 1/2

Term 4 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back to term 4. We hope you all had a relaxing, enjoyable holiday break and have enjoyed hearing all about it during the first 3 weeks of the term.

We have lots of exciting learning experiences taking place this term, and cannot wait for your children to discuss these with you.

This term our writing focuses will continue with Narratives from last term in which we will be planning, drafting and publishing stories using a range of mediums. We will also be creating procedural texts and persuasive texts. We encourage you to join the learning experience at home by using procedural texts with your children, E.g. recipes, game instructions etc.

In reading this term we are re-visiting a range of reading strategies to enable our students to attempt unknown words, including, breaking words into chunks and using their letter/sound knowledge to sound out words. We will also continue to extend our students knowledge of the Oxford Words.

At the beginning of this term we focussed on multiplication and length. We discussed multiplication of “groups of” and it would be fantastic if you encourage this language at home with your children. E.g. “We have 4 lolly bags with 8 lollies in each, how many lollies are there all together?”

Students are required to read and return their take home books daily, as well as their personalised Oxford Wordlist and complete their spelling words using the Look, Say, Spell, Cover, Write, Check strategy. It is important that these lists are returned daily as part of your child’s routine to allow teachers to assess reading/spelling when required.

Please ensure your child has an appropriate hat (broad brimmed) for the duration of term 4. Students without hats will spend recess and lunch under shaded areas as per the school policy and department guidelines. Please ensure your child’s hat is clearly labelled with their name. As the warm weather increases we also encourage students to bring water bottles to stay hydrated during the day. Cordial, juice, milk etc. will NOT be allowed during class times.

Reminders

Students will continue to line up in the morning outside their classroom’s external door. Students will be dismissed from this door at the end of each day. In the case of extreme weather conditions, please wait at the top end of the learning hub for your child to be dismissed.

If you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please make an appointment to meet with them at a suitable time to ensure your discussion can be in-depth and avoid interruptions. Alternately, you can phone the school on 9743 0633 and leave a message for the staff member to call you when they are available. We appreciate your understanding and support in this process. If your child is absent from school or out of school uniform, it is a requirement that you send a note to school.
We will continue to promote “brain food” breaks at approx. 10am daily. Please provide your child with a SMALL piece of fruit or vegetables in its natural form. Please no packaged/processed foods (fruit cups, juice boxes etc).

Thank you for your support and we look forward to a wonderful term 4.
